How much more does it cost to hire union vs. non union construction crews in California?

Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought we can’t hire a union guy to sign a contract with single family home project.

That is a difficult question to answer. Union crews are paid based on Union negotiations. Non-Union crews are paid based on market conditions and minimum wages in the state. Depending on the contractor, the price may not fluctuate much as you usually pay more than Union wages already (example: $95 / hr for electrical). The electrician may make $35 per hour or the union worker may make $45 per hour; but you are still paying $95.00/hr to your GC. They may bump the price up about 10 bucks to cover or they could leave it the same.

This is a Great Question. Unfortunately, it’s tough to answer correctly with such limited information.
Union workers are primarily hired for Commercial Projects, which can include large Multi-Family projects, (i.e. Mixed-Use Projects, High Rise Condos).
Other than that, they don’t usually do single family residences or custom homes.

Check if the project requires Prevailing Wage.

Check the AHJ for regulations on hiring union personnel.
