How much of a cost savings would there be if we gutted our kitchen ourselves prior to a complete remodel?

We would be removing everything - ceiling to floor for a complete reno. the attached 1/2 bath would be included too.

Good question. Most of the cost is the disposal of debris. Disposal fees range from $145 to $190 a ton. Labor can be from $500 to $800 a room depending on the size of room and the level the room is on.

Be very careful when demolition of your project. Homeowners do tend to want to take on this end of the project themselves and are not aware of the consequences. If you do not know what your doing and you cut into existing wiring/plumbing, etc., it can tend to add significantly in cost to the homeowner. The repairs exceed the cost if it was not done properly in the first place. Example, homeowner did do the demo of a Master bedroom/bathroom suite and cut into all the existing wiring. All the wiring had to be replaced and this did add a huge increase to the cost!

There may or may not be a substantial cost savings to performing your own demolition service depending on the size and scope of the project. However, every dollar you save during a renovation is a dollar you can spend on something else within the project. Unless you are a licensed plumber or electrician it is ALWAYS best to have a properly qualified person take care of these things. If you decide to do your own demolition remember to wear the proper safety gear- glasses, respirators rated for your situation, good work shoes/boots and gloves. It is also a good idea to seal off the room you are working in from the rest of the house, dust travels everywhere! Don’t forget about HVAC ducts during this step. With a good plan and some hard work anything can be accomplished
