This depends on the lay out of the kitchen, is there an oven or refrigerator near by. Also do you want to have seating at this island? I usually draw up my own kitchens and will put an island in the kitchen and show the movement around the island. With no appliance mentioned above I always like to try to keep everything atleast 36” all the way around but also can do 32” pretty comfortable depending on the layout and useage.
How much space is needed for a kitchen island is really question of how much space is left after walking space all sides of the island is subtracted. 36 inches is needed all around the island. The island itself requires 24” for the cabinets underneath, and another inch for a backer panel (at least) plus 1 1/2” on both front and back for overhang on the counter top (total =28”). Side to side, 3” total for overhang of counter, plus any additional side panels
36" minimum clearance from all sides.
That is a very generic question, reason being there are a lot of variables that go into figuring the allotted space for a kitchen island. For example how big is the the island that’s desired, how big is the current space, is it just an island or is electrical or plumbing involved? Do they want a range installed.
Great question! First I would look at the individuals utilizing the kitchen space and layout. Its important to not wither it’s a family dynamic with kids and pets, ADA considerations with Age in place or special needs and Future needs. If so you might consider 36/42”from edge of counter to edged of counter ( countertop not cabinets ). In general, the minimum for appliance doors and arm swing minimums are 32”. If it’s a small galley or U shaped kitchen you might consider something on wheels.
It is recommended to have 42 inches between the island and any other wall/cabinets/appliance but you can reduce that to 36 or even 30 if you don’t mind a tight fit. Once you have these dimensions marked out you will know your islands maximum width and length.
To locate an island in front of kitchen counter you need at least a minimum of 3’-0" Isle at any side of the island. I recommend 4’-0" to 5’-0". Make sure if the island is in front of refrigerator or stove there is sufficient space for the person to reach inside of any cabinet and to be able to open and close those appliances while standing in front of that appliance.
For most islands sizes, it is also decided by what you provide as part of that island-- is it just cabinets or other added features such as an eating area, a sink, or stove.
The size of the island makes a difference obviously, but you should have at least 3’ of space on all sides at least. where the Range, Fridg., and dishwasher are located should have at least 42" clearance for doors opening etc.
You would have to leave a space between 36" to 42"
You need around 4 ft by 7 ft, around 30 square feet, but this varies based on the size of the kitchen.
