How much should it cost me to have a handyman replace my tub and tub surround with standard finishes?

Hi there,
This is a lengthy and detailed answer to your question! There is actually a much more cost effective solution to replacement called refinishing AKA reglazing or resurfacing. This is a different solution to liners which sit on top of existing fixtures and many people are against due to trapped water, mold and bad measurements.
If the area has underlying issues such as plumbing or leakage, those issues would need tending to first. Tubs and surrounds are pretty inexpensive as they sit new in a store, however you will be charged for demo of existing fixtures, plus removal/dumping fees plus labor of course. There is typically a several day work time for the bathroom being out of use also. Even though everything being installed may be standard, the end result will still set you back upwards of $2500 typically depending on your chosen contractor. We did our own research into this and asked our clients what contractors were quoting them and some were almost as high as $10,000.
Refinishing typically has a set price for either tub, tub and surround, with tile by the square foot. A reputable company will not use the same epoxy solution that is found in home stores which begins to peel up after 6-12 months we are told. Qualified refinishers in our area (PA & NJ) charge from $300-500 for a tub and $600-800 for a standard tub and surround. Our company includes the repair of minor chips and spider cracks in our price and we can color match or spray a completely new color on top of the existing finish. The area is prepped first to get down to the original finish so that our products can have the maximum adherence and durability possible, then built up in layers of HVLP spray coats for a uniform glossy finish. We offer a 5 year warranty but our products can far out last that, so do be wary of a company offering anything less. The entire process should take a few hours and the fixtures are ready for use the next day.
I would recommend getting several quotes from various contractors and also doing some more research into other options which will literally save you thousands. As always, company reviews and testimonials are very telling of a company and so do look for those also.
Best of luck with your update!
