How much would a 40 gallon hot water heater cost to replace?

A hot water heater can cost anywhere from $700-$2000 depending on the type of installation required which is unique to each individual project. Improper installation of water heaters can be dangerous and deadly. Always make sure to get a licensed and qualified individual to install it.

These are interesting answers…let’s try to cut through with some facts

As with all price local and brand make a huge difference. We are in a major metro area. Everything is more here then say and hour west where it’s quite rural. Bradford white is the only heater we install so my answer is based on a 6 year Bradford.

Second price factor. Comp. a sole proprietor with all the insurances lic and such less comp is going to charge less because not only is it his labor but by law he does not have to pay comp on himself. You can get a good job from this sort of contractor but Many sole props use subs to avoid comp and they are not actually subs. They are employees and the contractor is skirting the law. This is not always the case but common. So for my answer we will factor lic insured contractors with comp.

There are still factors after this like marketing, quality, and (in house)warranty but these level the field enough to give an idea.

40 gal gas(always more than electric) natural draft
$850-2000
We charge $1250 including disposal of old unit 2 ball valves and a gas cock as needed

40 gal elec
$750-1800

We charge $1025 includes same

50 gal powervent
$1450-2500
We charge $1850

Bad access will increase all these in direct ratio to how difficult it is to get in and out.

We offer one year warranty on all equipment we install. No matter the problem(unless you hit it with a hammer). There is no one size answer. As I said an hour west these numbers all drop by 20 percent minimum. Hope this helps- Josh

ranges around a 1000. could be more when you start adding safety pans, drain line, expansion tank, new valves etc
