We're thinking about extending out or upstairs bathroom, by cutting out into the walk-in closet that connects the bathroom to one of the upstairs bedrooms. We want to remove the old bathtub and build a new, larger, walk-in shower, as well as tear out the old counter and replace it with his-and-hers stand-alone sinks. We know it will involve a lot of rewiring and pumbing work, as well as some demolition (a couple walls need to be removed). Due to age and water-damage, the floorboards near the bathtub and the toilet need to be torn up and replaced, and then we want to replace the carpet on the floor, both in the bathroom and where the walk-in closet currently is, with tile flooring. The lighting will need updated as well. How much would all of this cost to get done?

Taking away closet space will hurt the resale value of your house, as well as removing the only bathtub in the house. Unless the current bathroom is very small and there is another bathroom with a tub, but it definately sounds like an update is needed. There are many factors to consider when remodeling a bathroom, for example, cost of tile can vary between $1 a sq ft - $10 a sq ft. Is the shower floor going to be tiled or use an insert? Is the wall to closet load bearing? Cost of vanity and top? Granite can be around $100. sq ft depending on grade. Cost of fixtures? Shower faucets and diverter( behind the shower wall) vary, i.e. over head shower heads and body jets can get expensive depending on how fancy. They even have remote controlled ones now with blue tooth capabilitys for music. The basic standard models seen in the average home run around $200 though. Sink faucets, basins,medicine cabinet or mirror, toilet as well as tp holders, towel racks, trim and paint, all have to be figured in as well. So to answer your question for a" base line " bath remodel with extension i would plan on budgeting atleast $8500.00 on the low end. We have done this kind of a job in San Francisco. Took space from a closet and another room, expanded into two bathrooms.
The end result was a Spa like full bthroom with jet bath, steam shower, granite countertop, mirrors throughout, full tile, full plumbing full electrical, along with flooring. The guest bath has a shower, toilet and sink, fully tiled to perfection.
The plumbing alone was about $10 - 15 K in the year 2008, the full job was near $90K, including all the fixtures.
The customer sold the house with a great increase in value.
