How often do I need to change my filter

when its dirty change it

Air filter media are designed to typically be changed every 3-6 months with normal wear and tear. Air filter media run the gambit from physical reusable filters that you remove and clean, to throw away disposable filters that are typically found in residential hvac air handlers. In both cases over time particulates are trapped on the surface and threading of filter media. This can cause obstruction of air flow and in serious cases become a breeding ground for organic material like mold.

If you live in southern areas of the United States you can expect humidity or dusty conditions to cause more buildup then the typical 3 month minimum.

The rule of thumb is that if you can see it, it’s in your air flow. If the filter is removed and shows visible dirt and grime, consider replacing it. If you have visible moisture or wet spots, replace it and call a professional to examine your hvac system. Small leaks, moisture and dirt can combine for nasty situations in your duct work.

When you first get the home, or to determine the length of time for your home check the filter every month. If you reach the 3 month mark and the filters are within your budget I would suggest always replacing them within 3 months. Reusable permanent filter media can be kept until you have fraying of the material. Never reuse a washed throwaway filter. Never replace the filter until it is completely dry if you have a reusable filter media. Do not allow your air conditioner to run without a filter in place. When in doubt call a professional.

Simply put, when it is dirty.
I recommend using a high quality pleated air filter, mainly, to protect your system far over providing air quality. A quality filter (pleated), filters the air. A standard 30 day throw away filter is the same as not using a filter at all. A pleated filter is normally white. As soon as you notice an even slight change in color, time to go. It is far less expensive to replace a filter than to clean an indoor coil and also hopefully avoid “dirty-sock-syndrome”. Owner, Rob Tackett’s O.C. Air & Heat

I suppose it all depends on where you are in the country. And how often your furnace is cycling.

Here in Massachusetts, most of hvac customers usually change their filters around every 6 months.

A few change them monthly, and I have one, that uses a expensive hypoallergenic HEPA electric air filter and changes it every 8 weeks, whether it needs it or not. Usually a visual of the filter should give you a idea of when it’s needed.

There are several factors that determine when you should change your filter.

  1. If you have a standard 1" non pleated filter (Monthly)
  2. If you have a standard 1" pleated filter (every 2-3 depending if you have pets)
  3. If you have a media type 5" pleated filter (every 9 months depending if you have pets)
  4. If you have an electronic air cleaner (Quarterly)
