How often do you think you need to paint the exterior of your home?

A few questions come to mind. The geographical location of the project, quality of the workmanship and products used on the previous paint job, etc… I see your best be answered with call a local paint store who will be happy to give you the contact information of couple of their preferred contractors with whom you can schedule a site visit. This approach can save a lot of time over having to wade through researching painting contractors to contact in your area.

The exterior painting of your home can be a large expensive project. If prepped and painted properly, most paint jobs should last seven to ten years. This doesn’t mean a homeowner should wait this amount of time to paint areas which receive harsher weather conditions than others. Preventative maintenance is a must to insure that the building materials under the paint are protected from Mother Nature… With most contractors, estimates are free. Proper prep, professional application and preventative maintenance…three keys to longer lasting exterior paint jobs.

If you pressure wash the property and let dry 1 day: Prep and prime entire home with exterior quality primer then apply a finish coat of 100% acrylic exterior quality paint the finish should last you at least 10-12 years if the contractor has executed the job in a professional manner and not cut the paint with water and the quality of the paint has at least 50% or more solids in it. Some fading may be present on the south west side due th the sun.

it depends but in most cases as soon as it starts to decolorate would be a great time

It all depends where you live… weather plays a big factor on the wear and tear of anything.especially paint. If you live in an area where it is very humid or next to the ocean you can end up painting the exterior of your home every few years. in some areas 10 years can pass and your paint still looks great. obviously make sure you use the right paint for your home as well. If you are thinking of painting your home ask your local professional paint store what paint you should use … make sure to tell them what surface/materials you want to paint over

It depends on a number of factors, primarily your home’s exterior finish, your location, and the quality of your last paint job. Read all about it.

How Often Should You Paint?

Wood siding should be repainted every 3-7 years, or stained approximately every 4 years.
Aluminum siding can go about 5 years between paint jobs, and stucco 5-6 years.
New types of materials require less frequent touchups; for example, cement fiberboard siding should need painting only about once in 10-15 years.
Brick, if unpainted, only requires occasional cleaning, although you will need to paint the trim, of course. If you do choose to paint the brick itself, a good quality job will last 15-20 years.

Depending on what kind of siding is on the home. You may have vinyl, aluminum, wood, brick, etc. If your home is sided with wood, you are going to want to primer and paint any exposed wood as soon as you notice it. If you leave wood exposed to the elements , it will rot and eventually the outside elements will make their way inside of your home. Always primer bare wood before you paint your finish coat. If you have aluminum or vinyl siding, your typical paint job will fade over time from the UV exposure. If you are looking to get the most money out of your paint job, I would advise to paint it every 10 years instead of every 5-7. If you spent $5,000 every 5-7 years compared to spending $5,000 every 10 years, you will be able to save more money towards other home improvements such as roof replacement, furnace, hot water tank, kitchen remodel etc. Although most paints say they will last 10-25 years, it all has to do with how thick the paint is applied, and the amount of UV light the paint is exposed to. The more UV light on a paint job , the faster it will fade.

I can only answer for the geographical area where I work and live, the southeast. The sun is brutal here in the summer and it fades exterior paint severely and fairly quickly. A good paint job with a premium paint will generally last 4-5 years here before you start seeing signs of fading, unless the home is partially or completely shaded, in which case it could go as long as 7-8 years. If you rub your hand across the siding and there is any chalky residue on your hand, it’s definitely time to repaint.
