How should I protect recently stripped wood?

I recently stripped the dated varnish off my fireplace mantel with the intent of painting it white. However, I decided I liked the look of the natural wood, and would now like to keep it as is.

Do I need to do anything to seal or protect the wood, or can I leave it as is, given that its mostly a decorative surface that gets little use.

Hi, I recommend to seal it with flat sealer that will not give it shine or color and will protect it from the oxygen. You can find it in any paint store or hardware stores.
