I’ve seen a bunch of pictures of kitchens with hardwood floors, but wouldn’t they be ruined by the everyday mess of a kitchen? Or is there a special coating/finish that is used to make these floors last?
Wood kitchen floors are very common. Hardwood floors in the kitchen will get ruined if you don’t take care of them. If you spill a liquid, you should clean it up as soon as you can. Wood floors aren’t as tough as other materials, but they will be fine as long as you do basic clean-up and maintenance.
I’m not aware of any special coating or finish.
If you are still wondering about using hardwood floors for the kitchen and you didn’t make a purchase yet; I would recommend you to consider distress hardwood floors. They are very popular right now, and the best feature besides its look is that light scratches or stains are not going to be that noticeable. They make it look just right.
If you can get it as a distressed engineer hardwood floor is even better since it can hold better with light moisture variations.
Oh, distressed hardwood is a great idea! I’m going with a darker, more rustic kitchen so this will work well.
As for the engineered hardwood floors, I never really liked those. I lived somewhere in the early 2000s for a couple years that had them and they were always clearly different – maybe it was the texture, or the finishing, but they looked like lesser quality. I’m sure this has improved over the years, but do you have any brands you’d recommend that really maintain that authentic hardwood look and feel?
Thank you! This is super helpful.
II’ve used many brands, but I installed Mirage and Preverco, and they seem to be good. You should visit a local hardwood floor distributor; since even within same manufacturers, there are considerable differences in quality from one line of products to another one.
Most Engineered hardwood flooring has a very durable finish/coating that should last many years, even in the Kitchen. The only area in a home I recommend NOT using wood are wet areas, such as bathrooms.
