I have a very small galley kitchen in Manhattan and I live in an old building. Are there any special tricks or considerations I should know while planning my remodel?
Small galley kitchens especially in an apartment building are tricky.
If you are planning on relocating the sink you will find yourself with a problem with drain relocation.
Its advised to keep the utilities in its current location.
But here are a few design tricks for you:
1)Modern slab cabinets are a great way to keep your kitchen cabinets not looking too busy.
2)If you currently have a range unit I would advice to do a built-in oven with a cooktop ontop, this will allow for your cabinets and counter to be continuous and will prevent those pesky gaps between the range and the cabinets.
3)To keep the clean look and prevent the usage of busy tile backsplash I would advise using either a colored glass sheet as your backsplash or the same material as your counter tops.
4)Don’t add too many upper cabinets to allow the feeling of space when you walk into the kitchen space.
Hi Joanna,
First, after you have an idea of scope of work and timeline we would advise to think about living arrangement during your renovation. It can get loud and dirty and abrupt your daily routine.
Second, think about your neighbors and building. Since you said it’s an old building, unexpected issues may come up and affect your neighbors.
Third, NYC has its rules and regulations when it comes to renovations. In order to be protected, hire a licensed and insured contractor that knows their ways through filing with DOB.

Yes. You should hire a design professional such as an Interior Designer with Project Management experience and/or a Design Build Firm. You can re-locate your sinks and gas lines; however, there is a science to it (how far can it be moved) and a cost involved. Everything is possible- you just need to hire that professional who knows how to bring it to fruition. One thing I like to do is create 1 wall of tall cabinets which will house all. The other wall can become focal point with a great backsplash. One side is high, the other low with counter space where you need it best.
