Bold interior colors are in style right now, such as a multicolored room with two walls in Burgundy and two in Sienna. However, if you need to paint the interior walls before you sell I would suggest staying with light neutral colors because every buyer will have a different taste.
Exterior earthtone colors are in right now, such as Clay, Medium Gray and Taupe trim. Also, white goes with anything. If the paint on your house is still in good condition you could try to sell it as is, because you may not recoup the entire cost of the painting when you sell.
A good way to find good exterior paint colors for your project is to check out the current vinyl siding colors being sold at a near-by siding dealer in your area. Siding manufactures spend a great deal of time and money researching the best selling colors to stock in your area. You can also purchase a piece of vinyl siding and hold it against your home in your setting and against your shingle color before you make the decision to paint. However, when you do paint you might want to paint a small area and look at it during several times of the day. As the sun changes position so does the color of the paint.
Both Answers prior to me are great answers. Multiple colors around the house keep it from being boring. The earthtones are nuetral. I like the answer of Off whites because your tastes will differ from that of potential buyers so they will almost definitely be painting again AND whites make your area look bigger. That would be a bonus to your sell.
The color often depends on the area and potential buyer. I would recommend bold colors as mentioned below, but for the extra few dollars, an accent color (second color) can go a long way. The owners of PCS also act as residential property investors and prefer to use Sand Dollar (6099 at Sherwin Williams) with an egg-shell white on the ceiling and trim.
An addition to an accent color, spraying will give a nice even coat and make your home stand out.
In the past I have recommended going with a neutral color in the common areas with white trim and doors. Kitchen and baths need to have a diffeent color, but not to bold. The bedrooms I would paint them light blue for the boys room and light yellow or a peach color for the girls room and last, I would paint the master bedroom a lavender or light crimson to give it the “Oh Woww”!
Painting it all one color shows you are being cheap or that you have no taste. You want the potential buyers to FEEL the ROOM!
Dont know too much on this topic but wanted to voice my personel input. very neutral colors, this way who ever moves in can work with any color for the most part with any furniture or carpet they could put in
The rule of thumb taught to me by my father, who was a painter for more than 50 years is neutral tones are the best across the board. They not only brighten and highlight, but can easily be painted over with darker colors. Interior neutral tones make a room appear larger.
Bold and highly contrasting colors are usually personal taste… can look great to one person, but turn off a potential buyer. At that point they are thinking what they might have to spend to personlize the home for themselves before even making an offer on that property.
Exceptions would be if you belong to a home owners association, where color tempatures are similar,if bold colors are used
. Or towns like Cape Cod,Massachusetts, where bold earthy tones and high contrasts are fun,the local norm, and make homes stand out.Alot of deep Maroon colors, browns, blues, greens, and grays. There colors are reversed, dark homes with light accent colors.
In my educated opinion and experience,I would say the safe bet is go with neutral tones, and not too bold of an accent color.
when doing interior painting is to paint the walls a neutral light colors like beige, Swiss coffee, or any other off with shade color and the ceiling and trim white. In fact, if you keep the trim and ceiling white, a wide range of colors will look attractive on your walls. The key to interior colors is to combine warmth with neutrality. Warm colors are inviting and give a home a little more character than plain white walls would. Neutral colors help emphasize space and create the feel of a relaxing home.
Interior paint should be a soft color, white, continental cream, light colors are clean, also a accent wall gives contrast and can be appealing to a buyer,.and a nice white ceiling will always compliment your wall colors.
When trying to attract buyers, i suggest a dual color dark/light color. Pick something that fits well with your community and is exciting enough to attract curb appeal. White/dark color goes well together. Go bold but yet appealing. For the interior its all you. Bright viberant colors like red / yellow / green / aqua are in so each room can have its own theme. I personally do not recommend it but many young couples love this kind of thing.

We work with homeowners and realtors in the mid-atlantic region, so our philosophy, vs mabe a realtor/homeowner in CA may differ. We go neutral, just like many of the answers below. neutrals open up the space tremendously. If we were to use bold colors as suggested, then we may lose customers for the mere fact of their distaste of the color on the walls. If we stay neutral, this gives the new homeowners a chance to paint their own colors, or choose to just use accents with the nuetralpainted home.
Neutrals! ‘Style’ is constantly changing and not everyone likes the current trends. You can never go wrong with neutrals. Sherwin Williams 6106 Kilim Beige is a great neutral color for the interior. It won’t lean pink, yellow, or green like some other beige options that are out there. For the exterior, take a look at your neighbors homes and pick a color that will go with the style of your neighborhood.
if you want to sell your home in the future i recommend of going with colors like gray, white or light yellow. But every buyer looks at the kitchen and bathrooms of an home and that is what sells and a home.
If you are looking to sell your home it is best to go with neutral colors. Also I would suggest to reach out to a realtor in your area and ask what colors seem to be getting the most Positive reactions leading to sales.
When you are constructing a house, it is very easy to select colors that you personally like, however it is so important to remain neutral. We tend to stay with earth tones, unless we are constructing a custom home for a client, where they select all their own desired colors.
Think about the future and if there is a chance you may sell?
We tend to select neutral earth tones from Sherwin Williams for our homes, we also select neutral/earth tone carpet colors and tile. Our last model home featured a beautiful neutral travertine tile.
These are the exterior colors which we have just used on our last model home:
Cool colors are popular right now, however I would suggest staying with neutral colors. Always remember you are trying to appeal to the widest audience possible. It’s not what you like, but what will attract the most potential customers. The same can be said for the outside. I would suggest going to your local paint store (not hardware store) and asking the sales associate their most popular neutral colors.
Neutral colors will appeal to more people. Also, make sure to check with any homeowners associations involved, sometimes they have stipulation on exterior colors that can be used.
