When building a home vs buying a home, you need to look at location vs availability as well as consider what are needs vs wants. More often than not, buyers and builders settle for something less than what they would like. Price is a huge factor as well. I have come across a lot of older homes that were built with better care than homes built today. Do your research on who built the home as well as any work that’s been done and if they were a credible source for the work done.

This is quite the open ended question. First you have to ask yourself: do you find that the homes on the market do not suit your needs? This could be aesthetic, quality, size, special features, etc. Second, do you have the patience to undertake building a custom home? Between the architectural design and construction, this could take anywhere from 1-2 years. Third, do you have the budget for a custom home? Understand that besides the hard costs of land and construction, there are more soft costs associated with a custom home than buying a home.
