Yes, the driveway definitely will need to be sealed. The sealer closes up holes and the minor cracks in the cement and it prevents water from getting in there. If you live in a cold climate and the water gets in the cement, it will freeze and crack the cement. If you live in a warm climate, it’s still a good idea to seal to prevent erosion after years.
If you had a chance to be in Germany, you can see the perfect smooth German highways. Many of them were built 30 or 40 years ago and did not require any repairs or seal. If the concrete job is done correctly, you do not need anything.
Sealer, provided you use a good one, is great to put on your driveway as it helps prevent oil stains and such and helps keep your driveway looking nicer for longer.
Sealing your driveway concrete provides protection against the elements especially if in an area with snow/ice. It is well worth the little cost to protect it. You can also have a coating specialist seal/densify your driveway which will protect it for 15 years. The other option is to have Rubaroc installed on your driveway which protects it. Rubaroc is a rubber surfacing which we use to beautify and cover up the cracks in local driveways. In the Southwest we have temperature changes from cold to hot frequently and that does lots of damage to exterior concrete even if poured correctly.
