Is it okay to report other contractors for working beyond the scope of their license?

I think it is absolutely ok to turn people in that are not licensed or operating outside the scope that their license allows. These guys are taking food off our tables. It cost me a lot of money to keep my license up to date with insurance and workers comp. These guys don’t pay for that so they are out cutting our throats on pricing. I can’t tell you how many calls I get from people needing a licensed contractor to come bail them out of a mess that an unlicensed guy got them in. Then it ends up costing them a lot more money to fix their problems.

As a contractor, there are some legal avenues into other trades, but limited…It just depends on the scope and work completed.

We believe it is our responsiblity to uphold the State Contractor Licensing Board (in Ohio it is the OCILB- Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board) to maintain the integrity of our profession. That means we follow the rules, and those who do not should be reported. This is also the same for the EPA Lead Safe Certifications. We report anything that we feel is being done outside of the rules, for the protection of the consumers who may not know the regulations required. Contractors are like physicians at a property. Just like a doctor, surgery should only be in the hands of the proven, qualified, and licensed professional.
