Is it recommended to customize IKEA cabinets?

IKEA makes hundred of different cabinets so depend what you have got and how much it was cost you.Generally every one knows that Ikea is cheap and fall a part in not so long period of time.Sometimes custumize cheap cabinets could cost much you more then the cabinets are worth.

My name is Andy Moussouras, general contractor of Archeon Construction. I have been a contractor for 30 years and in construction since 1977 when I graduated from high school. Both as a superintendent and as a general contractor have build over 2 million square feet and this is my opinion on IKEA cabinets. I LOVE THEM.

Having installed over 20 kitchens using these cabinets, I’m impressed in how they are engineered and look. I have installed them in apartment units for rent, in condos for sale and in million dollar homes I have bought remodeled and resold.

The common impression is that they are particle board and not plywood so they are not strong. The same used be said about anything plywood that wasn’t dimensional lumber. So, this is my professional view.

All wood that is susceptible to water or moisture deteriorates. Also, all abused cabinets and doors that have animals scratching or chewing on them deteriorate. I have seen both scenarios over and over again.

Therefore, it is not that the cabinets are made of plywood or engineered particle board that should be the concern, but rather, the abuse by the user should be the concern.

For a long time, the European hardware used by IKEA has been superior to the American hardware found on mid range plywood cabinets.

Finally, once the user has assembled the first cabinet which has all the parts and instructions in the box, then confidence is built and finishing assembling the rest of the cabinets becomes fun.

In closing, I have no interest in IKEA, other then I love there product. And recently in Feburary, 2015, they have come out with a new line of cabinets -

IKEA can fit a need. They can look good and ARE cost effective. They are not however a quality cabinet. Use with caution in the right way for the right reason.

I would not use Ikia, they are made from particle board which will break quickly
