Just had my pan Hot Mopped. Should I install the wall concrete board before or after the pan is floated?

Hi Robert

thanks for reaching out to us. Installing a hot mopp shwr pan is the most durable and typically is the most bullet proof way to obtain a water tight condition for a future shwr tile floor. However they must be done right and in the proper order to correctly flash everything in. We also highly recommend doing a mortar bed application in lieu of backer board for this application. Heres our recommendations:

  1. Make sure you have solid backing all the way around your shwr at the transition of hot mopp to wall board. This will ensure proper nailing and a good hold for everything. Hot mopp should go up the wall about 12" min.

  2. Do your hot mopp. Make sure your drains are properly placed and weep holes are sealed to prevent tar from blocking them.

  3. Then float your floor up to proper drain height, slope etc.

  4. Next you can install your wall system overlapping the top of the hot mopp by a min of 2-3 inches for nailing. Or down to the floor if using a backer board. Stay away from making penetrations in the hot mopp walls as much as possible.

  5. You can then start your tile application.

Hope this helps!
