Other than a MHIC license are you required to have a state or county license to be a general contractor in Maryland?

I am thinking of starting a general contracting company primarily building decks, sheds, gazebos, etc. All outside projects. Other than the Maryland Home Improvement Contract license, are you required to obtain a state and or county license as well?

Each county, city or town may require a separate business licence. These are mainly for collecting fees that aren’t directly related to a specific job or permit (overhead). As long as you’re sticking to the “decks, sheds, gazebos, etc.” the home improvement license is all you should need in Maryland.

Every county is different. But you must register and pay a licensing fee at the County Permits and Zoning office. You will need to apply for building permits depending upon the project. All jobs are then inspected. This is to protect the homeowner and ensure that all materials are up to code as well as all set back from property lines are correct.
