I am doing an extensive remodel of a home in the Seattle area, and since so much of my home will be under construction, I am thinking about having a home security system installed, preferably one with automation functions as well, such as UVerse. Or alternatively, is it worth considering separate security and automation solutions (e.g. ADT and Control 4)? What should my considerations be? How expensive are these to install, in general? Has anyone had experience with a particular company, good or bad?
The most cost effective way would be to have separate systems. Places like ADT, Brinks, etc. will install a security system free of charge, but charge you a monthly monitoring fee. They (ADT, Brinks, etc.) have home automation, but it is very limited and will cost you money to add. With a separate home automation system, you can customize your house to suit your needs. As far as cost is concerned, that will be determined by the level of function you are looking for and the size of your home.
