Refinish dark water-stained floors?

As a result of having pets that knock over water bowls and dump water on the floor in all sorts of way, we have some water staining around the edges of our pine wood floors in a couple areas.

Can this floor simply be refinished, or does it have to be replaced? And how much would this cost for two 2x3ft sections of floors? It’s only the edges of the board that have become swollen/discolored. Thanks!

Zach,
The simply answer is yes it can be salvaged. The process can be a bit tricky though. Also the cost is tricky as well. First lets talk rehab. The floor boards may need to be sanded, and only the ones effected, so that means tapping off the area, then the dark areas may need to be bleached or treated to remove the darkness. Since its a limited area the boards will need to be sanded by means of hand or a small sander. finally the area would need to be refinished with a polyurethane that matches the original, and feathered in not to leave overlap. The cost is tough because its more of a time and material type repair, and not a sq. ft. price. We usually have min. charges for jobs such as this. Expect to pay a professional around $750 + to perform something like this.
