Should bathroom tile be even after a repair?

The wall behind the tile around my bathtub had water damage and the tiles got loose. I called in a contractor who replaced the damaged wall and put the tiles back and re-grouted them. The tiles are now uneven and he said after a repair you can’t get them back even 100% without replacing the tile. Is this true? And if I want to get more work done so the tiles are even, did I waste my money getting the wall repaired?

If the contractor reused the existing tiles, he probably did not clean the old adhesive off the tiles well. That’s why you have now uneven tiles. All tiles around the tub (or shower) need to be installed on cement board. I have seen installation on plywood and that is bad decision. As soon as the plywood gets some moisture, the tiles start loosening up. I hope he did it right.
