Cement grout should be sealed once every couple years with a quality sealer like DuPont Stonetech Professional Heavy Duty Sealer. Regular cement grout is susceptible to stains and discoloring due to spills or hard water and requires additional maintenance. Sealer will help with some discoloring as long as the homeowner maintains it. Side note: grout and thinset purchased at a “big box store” are typically a different quality than those purchased at tile and flooring companies. This can make life hard during installation and leave you with a finished product that’s less than ideal.
We use urethane grout on all of our tile projects to make life easier for our clients.
For grout joints over 1/8" we use urethane grout for the following reasons:
QuartzLock 2™ Grout is a pre-mixed, ready-to-use urethane and colored quartz-based grout for ceramic, porcelain, glass and natural stone tiles on floors and walls. QuartzLock 2 Grout requires no sealing and is resistant to typical food stains and most household chemical products.
Pre-mixed, ready to use
Excellent chemical, stain and mildew resistance
Semi-flexible, low shrinkage and high crack resistance
No color fading, streaking or shading - Even when wet!
Fast and easy clean-up when compared to epoxy and cement grouts
Excess product can be saved and used later UV stable colors (non-yellowing)
Self-sealing - no sealing required
Non-sag formula great for vertical surfaces
Dust-free mixing
Fast, easy installation - installs up to 50% faster than other grouts
Superior to cement grout
We recommend thoroughly reading the instructions and limitations associated with urethane grout and practicing on a floor application prior to attempting a wall application. This is a superior product to other grouts and will leave you or your clients happy for a long time to come.
