Among other issues, our contractor’s team dented some of our walls and scratched our floors while transporting materials into the house. Is it OK if I ask them to fix this out of pocket?
Your contractor should have liability insurance which would cover any damage done to your home while the work was being done. You should always ask contractors for insurance information before the start of a job.
They should fix anything that they damaged.
Hi Harry, if a contractor damages something, it’s his responsibility to fix it. Sometimes in construction there is no way to avoid it, but its always easy to fix most of the times. So the answer is yes.
Yes it is totally ok for you to ask them to fix any damage caused by your contractor or any of his subcontractors. Accidents happen no matter how careful you are. The contractor should be paying attention to these things and offer to repair or replace anything that has been damaged in or on your property due to the construction without you even asking.
Absolutely Harry. Proper protection should have been used on the floor, for example RAM Board & although drywall is hard to protect it literally takes seconds to fix with some spackle.
No contractor should want to leave a house with damage that they caused.
Remind him that you will be leaving a review online about the fantastic experience you have had with him (say it in a positive way to get the best result).
Yes, that is standard practice in a situation such as this.
If the contractor or contractors team damaged your property they are liable to fix the damages out of pocket. Put the issue(s) in writing with a few pictures of damages attached and send via email to get things moving in the right direction for you.
Good afternoon Harry
As a general contractor I would expect you to ask the company to fix all and any repairs that happened from the employee or person who caused damage that wasn’t there. It is our responsibility as contractor’s to make sure there is no damage to your home .
Definitely. Be sure they are the ones that caused the problem and it wasn’t a child or pet. We like to take care of anything right away to keep the relationship in good order.
Absolutely, it is imperative that the contractor leave the premises in a better and cleaner condition then it was found. Make sure that you are hundred percent sure that it was their fault. It is a prerequisite in my book or they should be able to point you in the right direction of someone that can help if it’s not their fault.
Yes, worst case scenario: document it and send them a letter. If that doesn’t work, contact their insurance company. Every state is different.
Absolutely, it is totally ok for you to ask them to fix any damage caused by your contractor or any of his subcontractors.
Don’t ask them, tell them. Asking leaves the door open for them to find a way out of it. Any decent contractor would never put you in a situation where you have to request that they fix something they themselves damaged. Or if you DO have to handle it yourself it will reflect on their final payment.

Your contractor should be volunteering to fix any damage they cause. With my crews, I always instruct them to leave the home we are working on in at least the same condition we found it. If they damaged it just explain to the foreman and they should have no problem fixing it.
Absolutely. All damage (even the most minor) that was done to your property should be repaired by the contractor. It is imperative that you hire a contractor that is insured and bonded. All contractors that are insured and bonded will replace and/or repair anything damaged caused by their installation.
Contractors that aren’t insured or bonded have to pay for these incidents out of pocket, and can make it difficult to get those damages replaced.
