Aside from credentials and qualifications, are there certain personality characteristics you prefer when choosing your contractor?
I like to set up a meeting and talk to the people to get a sense of who they are before I proceed. I follow my gut instinct when talking to people who I am planning to do business with.
Distance from the job site is important to keep in mind to keep travel costs low. The contractor must be fully insured and bonded in the case of damages. Experience is probably the most important because a contractor has proven through many years of experience in being a reputable and established company.
When you are choosing a contractor, aside from obvious credentials there are certainly clues to look for to make sure your renovation will be a successful one. Communication is key - are you on the same page when it comes to design and finishes? You want the contractor to thoroughly understand the design aspects so that your renovation will look cohesive to the rest of your house. Time is the second most important consideration - get references and make sure that the project was completed on time and within the budget originally set. Lastly, neatness and cleanliness are very important to safety, and the quality of workmanship. Make sure the contractor’s personal appearance looks professional and his vehicle should look the same way. Your first impression is usually accurate so trust your gut.
Ask your contractor what type of equipment he has. Will he need to rent or does he own? A contractor with a lot of equipment may know how to use it better, and be more prepared to handle the work better.
