What are the advantages and disadvantages of stained concrete in a home?

Generally there are no drawbacks to using concrete stains at all. The only drawback that comes to mind is the amount of prep work involved. When painting a concrete project you can ‘cheat’ a little by not necessarily removing all the excess old paint since you are recovering it with new paint which is much thicker than stain so the thickness of the paint fills in the imperfections left by the old product. When staining all of the old paint must be removed because the stain product is much thinner ( almost the consistency of water) therefore, if any old paint is left on the project it will show through the finished product leaving a bumpy textured end product. I recommend using a product such as peel away along with a wire brush to thoroughly remove any of the old product, which will leave the prepped surface perfectly smooth and ready to stain. After your project is thoroughly prepped, apply your stain evenly and remember that less is more when it comes to stain. A small amount of stain goes a long way. Follow this procedure and and you will have a long lasting end product that will look perfect and save you future maintenance.
