While there may be many reasons you may hear âcracking soundsâ during extremely cold weather, frost breaks or frost heaves may be the reason.
During extremely cold weather moist soil freezes and the ground âcracksâ on the surface causing a loud âthudâ or âcrackingâ noise which can sound like your home is being hit by snow balls. Frost brakes or heaves are generally harmless, but can be somewhat disconcerting nonetheless.
I hope this helps!
