What are the "cracking sounds" I hear during extremely cold weather?

While there may be many reasons you may hear “cracking sounds” during extremely cold weather, frost breaks or frost heaves may be the reason.

During extremely cold weather moist soil freezes and the ground ‘cracks’ on the surface causing a loud “thud” or “cracking” noise which can sound like your home is being hit by snow balls. Frost brakes or heaves are generally harmless, but can be somewhat disconcerting nonetheless.

I hope this helps!

Homes with poor insulation can develop cracks in the walls and ceiling. The extreme cold outside paired with the warmer interior will cause walls to cracks - shrinking and expantion.
