The most important question to ask a prospective ‘mechanic’ for home improvement class work is whether or not the mechanic’s company holds a Contractor’s License issued by the state. As a predictor of the ability and skills required for home projects and repairs, a Contractor’s License is probably the most viable. A mechanic who does not hold a Contractor’s License is much more likely to provide substandard workmanship and materials. Any work an unlicensed mechanic performs comes without the protections provided by the state’s licensing process. The very appealing lower price you receive from a handyman will often turn into a much higher price in the end.
All contractors are not ordained wizards of construction however, so the second question you should ask is if the mechanic can provide a couple of names and phone numbers for recent customers. Then you can call and ask them about the mechanic.
