What is a vessel sink? How are they an improvement on other sink styles? Are they more expensive?

My friend told me I should consider adding a ‘vessel sink’ to up the style factor of my bathroom, but honestly I don’t know what she’s talking about. What are they, and what are the pros and cons of using one? Are they more expensive?

When considering changing a sink, vessel sinks can be utilized in many ways. Lots of clients hate re grouting around the sink. With a vessel sink the bowl is sitting above the counter top (Over-Mount), more modern look.

Sincerely,

A vessel sink is a sink that sits on top of your counter top (almost like a bowl). They are more expensive than a standard sink, especially because they require specific faucets that are designed to work with this type of sink. They can be quite stylish and unique and some see them as adding a cool extra flair to a bathroom. Typically we install them in a powder bathroom so that they are seen by guests. The downside is that they are much taller than a typical sink so they need to be placed on a cabinet that is shorter (32" or less). Common practice nowadays is to install taller cabinets in bathrooms (32-1/2" or 34-1/2"). If you place a vessel sink on top of these tall cabinets, they become pretty awkward to use, especially for shorter people. Hopefully this helps!
