I would use tile in case it ever floods.
Ceramic tile
We have been using Luxury Vinyl Planks in order to get the wood flooring look in a basement. Homeowners are very happy with the product and the look.
I think porcelain tile would be best.
I think the best for the basement floor is to use porcelain tile and ditra schluter as under layer to keep the moister away !!
If you take necessary precautions, you can successfully install ceramic tile, engineered hardwoods, vinyl, or carpet.
I like to use a floating engineered floor.
We just completed a basement job last week and we installed a Engineered Luxury Vinyl Plank
looks just like wood. It’s a solid vinyl material with a cork backing. nothing will hurt it not even water.
It was easy to install and looks wonderful.
Ceramic and porcelain tile is the best for the basement floor
I always recommend porcelain tile that looks like hardwood flooring. If a flood ever happens, you will not need to replace your floor.
From a longevity standpoint, nothing will last longer than ceramic / porcelain tile. Other flooring can be used, but may not perform as well. Many basements, especially in older homes lack proper foundation moisture barriers, allowing water vapor to pass through the concrete and into the floor covering. Over time this leads to degradation of the flooring. Another common issue is flooding, which will require replacement of any flooring aside from hard tile. Be leery of new LVP / LVT, and composite laminate manufacturers who claim to be 100% waterproof as they usually are not, and even if they were, the adhesives used or the backing (or both) will be moisture sensitive.
Is there a possibility of getting flooded?
If so, use a tile.
If you like, rubber tiles will hold up well.
If flooded, carpet or wood is the worst.
I would recommend using LVT (luxury vinyl tile). It comes in tile look or in hardwood flooring look. There is different options for it: one you glue on and then grout the seams, or my favorite one is one that is installed same as laminate flooring, where the tile clips in to each other, no need to mess with glue and grout. It also waterproof, and resistant to any moist because it’s made of vinyl. Great product to use in your basement, kitchen or bathroom areas.
The National Wood Flooring Association and our flooring installers won’t install any hardwood that would be 3 inches below grade. So the best flooring to install in a basement is engineered hardwood or tile. I always recommend tile, simply for the fact that you can put radiant heat under it and keep the room very comfortable. However, engineered wood is completely safe.
