What is the current thinking on using soft stones such as marble and soapstone on kitchen counters?

The current trend here in Portland is using Quartz Countertops that is what i am selling most of. The problem with soft stones is that they are very high maintenance. You will need to reseal them everyso often and dont even think about leaving a spill or food on the counter for too long or it will stain. Natural stones like marble have natural pores that will take in anything that is left on it, that is why you will need to seal it veryso often as directed by the manufacturer. Hope this helps.

Soft stone should never be used in kitchen counters as soft stone is more porous than hard stone or manufactured stone such as quartz counter tops. The porosity of the soft stone allows it to absorb food stains and thereby become permanently discolored. Stay with granite or man-made stone products intended for use in kitchen applications.
