We usually are as detailed as soon when we present our estimates so that we can minimize change orders.
You also need to verify what the contractor has delivered project within the time promised in his contract if there were no changes to the scope of work once the project begins by talking to past clients and also asking the contractor the size of his company.
Communication is also a very important part of the process when working with a contractor. Try to find out how responsive he/she is to your communications.
You can find out the quality of they work simply by reading their estimates. If the estimates are detailed, it would mean they have covered all aspects of the work to be done and will assure that the work will be taken care of in similar fashion.
Do your homework on who your hiring. Look them up on several different sites to see if they have good ratings for jobs that have been completed. And of course make sure they are licensed and insured.
OF COURSE LICENSE AND INSURANCE, BUT ALSO JUST AS IMPORTANT BE SURE TO SPEND A LITTLE TIME TALKING TO AND GETTING TO KNOW THE CONTRACTOR. YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO TRUST HIM. YOU NEED TO FEEL COMFORTABLE TELLING HIM THAT YOU HAVE AN ISSUE WITH ANY PART OF PROJECT. AS A CONTRACTOR, I LIKE TO FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT MY CUSTOMERS. TRUST & COMMUNICATION
