What kind of prep work should I do in advance of having my roof replaced?

Nothing at all - allow the professional to do the work you hired them to do.

It is extremely important to removal all existing shingles and repair all rotted or damaged wood as most shingle warranties do not cover overlays. You should always obtain a permit and use a professional when doing any work that is out of your scope.

Make sure the contractor has a permit pulled before any work can get done.

Preparing your Residence for a Quality Roofing Job

  1. Contact your roofing company with any questions or concerns.

  2. Be prepared for the noise! There will be constant hammering for one or more days, depending on the size of your roof.

  3. When shingles are delivered to your home, check the color.

  4. Notify your roofing company immediately if the color is not what you ordered.

  5. Remove all loose items from wall shelves and walls: pictures, plates, figurines.

  6. Hammering may create vibrations that shake these items off shelves and walls, make sure you put delicate items in a safe and secure area.

  7. Remove all items from around the house where roofing debris or bundles of shingles might fall: patio, pool furniture, potted plants, gardening equipment etc.

  8. Your installer will need access to your driveway to load up shingles and clean up miscellaneous debris so make sure to park your cars, motorcycles, bicycles, boats, etc., out of the driveway/garage area.

  9. Leave the gate open to allow access to the installer.

  10. Keep small children and pets away from the work area.

  11. Nails that fall from the roof during the job should be picked up with a magnetic nail roller. Please be advised; however, that a few nails, hidden in the grass or shrubbery, may remain, so be careful when you let small children or pets out in the yard.
