What kind of restrictions can my neighbors impose on me regarding solar panel installation?

I am a general contractor out of Boston. I have a lot of experience with erecting structures like new homes, additions, decks and fences. These can all be built with out any approval from the neighbors. In some cases the building inspector might say: “This is a very large addition - I want you to get written consent from the neighbors that will have direct sight of it from their home.” Or, the most common situation is I go to build a new home right on the water. Well, this new home is going to completely block the neighbor’s view of the water. So that neighbor will make noise to the building department and start a petition to have the home not be built. With all this experience I can 100% tell you that there is absolutely nothing your neighbors can do about you installing solar panels. NOTHING. If you think your neighbors will have a problem with this installation just make sure you have the installer pull the proper permits. I hope this helps.

Unless your solar structure imposes an obstruction of some kind on a neighbors property (which is a very rare occurrence) there is very little one sole complaint would do as far as impeding a project. That is unless you belong to an HOA in which case you would need an approval, where a sole issue could provide a road block.

None at all but if it is an HOA just play the part and submit to the board a request.

They can’t stop you but this way they feel validated.

Most HOA boards are largely comprised of retirees in my experience, so they love to have a HOA meeting.
