California recently legalized Accessory Dwelling Units (also known as in-law units or granny flats) which are small, separate units or additions to the main property. What’s the proper procedure for building new ADUs and for making sure formerly illegal units are legal and up to code?
You will need to check with the codes department to see if the address ever had any permits pulled, if the inspections were scheduled or if the inspections were passed as well as did it receive its certificate of occupancy. Most states now have a lot of this online in some form but a phone call or visit to your codes office can make this happen as well. The worst case scenario is most illegal structures will have to be taken down and must be started over, completely. It is possible to just demo and take it back to a point where inspections can happen that were not previously performed for footers, foundation, framing, plumbing etc etc.
