They had just finished knocking loose plaster of the carport ceiling. At any rate, after Fridays work I became concern because there were still loose pieces of plaster. I called to leave a message saying I’d pay him an amount, but did not want him to finish the work. The work being done was not as stated and I felt they cut corners. On Saturday morning he talks to me and continues starts to tape and plaster the carport ceiling.
We're one coat of paint away from finishing carport ceiling. The plaster tape still shows through. I have a feeling it will stay that way. I asked to the company to stop upon leaving much of the old plaster up. Upon showing up says, 'everything will be the way you want.' Just remember when a person says he's been doing this for 32 years, he means his father's company. (which I should know by now). I haven't paid in full, and don't know my rights yet. He'll come by because I still owe him, saying he'll see if a few places need touching up. I'm hoping to change of his son's work.
Saying he'd scrape up all the old stuff, left a panel on and many bits I could see that were loose. I wanted to back out, but he and his crew came back the next day saying he's in the business 32 years (his age). I still owe five hundred of the twelve hundred to do the job. There is still debris and I can see the plaster tape, though told he was using a coat of pain, a sealant, and another coat of paint. I just have a feeling about the old plaster left there, seeing the outline of tape used and light paint on the wood trim......... that I will end up paying him the rest with little to show for my concerns. Do I have recourse for an untidy, unfinished job or should I pay all of the fee? So I paid for a lesson learned for an exhorbitant and sloppy conclusion?
Give him the opportunity to finish the job and see if it’s what you expected. A lot of times the in progress portion of the job looks very different from the finished product. If after he is finished if it is not acceptable then you can request he re does the work, or not pay the remainder then. Never pay for a job before it is finished and signed off on by you the customer.

First & Most do not pay any more money untill he is done from the job. Give him the chance to finish it up, then walk through with it and point our your concearns, see if he will be responsible and fix them to your satisfaction. If not, do not pay him, give him a note in writing with your intentions of payment upon satisfaction or the option of you hiring some one else to finish up the job, after that pay the contractor and he might owe you money. If he paints on top of tape and exposed plaster, he can not sand, he needs to plaster and then paint without any thing showing under the plaster.
