What should I look for when hiring an electrician?

It is less about what to look for when hiring an electrician than it is what to look for when hiring any contractor or tradesman to complete a project for you. However, placing more emphasis on the hiring qualifications of an electrician is necessary because of implications of improperly completed work, such as fire, electrocution, etc. In addition to a variety of issues that could arise from ‘poor’ work, the bulk of electrical work is behind a wall; so, it is costly and difficult to resolve problems. Therefore, it is very important that an electrician be qualified so that the work is performed correctly on the first time.

What would I look for when hiring an electrician?

  1. Look for Experience.
You will want to know the electrician’s experience; i.e. did he/she work/train with the union; how many years of experience does the electrician have; where and in what capacity has the person worked as an electrician; etc.? Hands-on experience directly affects the electrician’s ability to properly diagnose the issue and resolve it, quickly.

  2. Look for a License
Many people know how to change outlets and run wire, but licensed electricians know the exact code. As a matter of fact, if they work in multiple counties and villages, they are most likely working with the most up-to-date code; so, you will want to look for a licensed electrician - even when the work being completed does not require one.

  3. Look for References
83% of homeowners hire based on referrals and references. That is an outstanding percentage! So, ask your Mom, Dad, Aunt, Uncle, etc. if they may have hired an electrician for a project. Ask what the project was and if the company did a good job? Your family won’t steer you in the wrong direction. If your family or friends couldn’t provide any good recommendations, then look online. Search! We are in the Information Age where everything is a click away, so research for good information. Remember, this is your home and you will be living there so it is important that the right person is hired. It is your right as a homeowner.

Use these 3 items above as a guideline to your search for a great electrician and you will certainly find a reputable tradesman. Also, electrical licenses are not posted (in this state, specifically), so just ask to see the license. It will be a certificate with a license number in the corner. And finally, be prepared for your meeting. Use the Internet to research if other people have the same issue and what it cost. Knowing just those two things will go a long way in the first meeting in-person or on the phone with the electrician. Good luck!

Being an Electrician myself and seeing some pretty interesting work, I would say that you want an electrician that is by the book. Meaning if he sees something out of place that he at least mentions it and recommends fixing it, even if its existing work that someone did something wrong or maybe it is just out of date and should be upgraded.

Hiring an electrician can be tricky. Always go with referrals when available, otherwise try looking up the company and looking for reviews. A license electrician will be able to provide proof of license when requested . When getting estimates look for the electrician to give you advice on the project , give you a time frame. Be aware, there’s too many people trying to do electrical work , it might be cheaper than a contractor quote but most likely it will not meet code, it might not be done properly, and be a hazard to everyone…

Here are some questions you should definitely be asking an electrician before you decide to hire them. This will help you to get a feel for the electrician and their work. As state previously it does help to do your research about the company and read the reviews about the company and electrician first.

  1. Are you licensed?
Electricians are required to be licensed in most states, so don’t consider one who isn’t properly licensed.

  2. What kind of work do you do most?
Like many contractors, electricians often specialize in one area or another. It is good to know that the electrician or any other contractor has experience in the project before hiring them.

  3. What does your estimate include?
In addition to pricing structure, be sure to discuss incidentals, like repairing drywall and other things affected by the electrical work. Chances are, you’ll be responsible for them, however, knowing is the most important thing.

  4. Do I need a permit? Who will obtain it?
A permit ensures electrical work will be checked by a city inspector-an important safeguard for homeowners. It’s standard for electricians (not homeowners) to pull permits.

Like any other expert, like a doctor, plumber, or auto mechanic, a trusted electrician is a valuable member of household maintenance team. As you review the list of electrician questions; keep in mind you also want someone who will explain what he is doing and why, one who will help you understand the essentials of your system. Ideally, the electrician you hire now will be a good source to call for emergencies and other projects down the road.
