Now that California has banned some of the best clear wood finishes, what are the most durable finishes for hardwood floors and cabinets that can be used in that state?
One of the best types of finishes is Moisture Cure urethane. Moisture-cure urethane is water-base polyurethane that is more durable and more moisture resistant than other surface finishes. Moisture-cure urethane comes in non-yellowing and is generally available in satin or gloss. These finishes are extremely difficult to apply, have a strong odor and are best left to the professional.
You also have a choice to have a custom finish. Custom finishes allow you to choose color, and design to best suit your home. If you check out our gallery, we have pictures that show our custom finishes.
Cali has cracked down on environmental specs and VOC’s in residential, commercial, and even automotive finishes are now water based in The Golden State. Floors- I have tried almost all of them available and legal in California. But I have had great results with Enduro-Var water based Urethane for clear coats. For water based solid colors I have done a few floors with AquaPoxy. Cabinets- I still use Varathane and Minwax Spar varnishes for some small brush on sealing projects. Spraying cabinets, I use water based lacquer by Target(no,not the Dept. store),and Enduro by General finishes. The is also an expensive brand out of Italy that is Cali friendly by a company called Renner. Haven’t tried that one yet. Water based urethanes and laquer finishes can be tricky to apply,so if you aren’t experienced, hire a pro.
We use waterborne floor finishes on all our projects in the San Francisco Bay Area and they’ve been problem-free.
