When hiring a sub contractor, is it better to go cheaper or spend more if the finishes are expensive?

I am looking for a contractor to remodel an average sized kitchen with expensive material like marble tile and solid wood cabinets so I just need some advice on this. I would normally do these kinds of jobs myself but I’m swamped with work and need some help.

I can tell you now in construction you get what you pay for. Take it from a contractor in Wisconsin with no influence’s to alter my answer towards your question. When going cheep you end up spending more in the long run. Anyone can install a product incorrectly and make it look good. The difference is two years from now it will look worse than it did prior to your remodel. If you spend the extra money that product will last 6x as long.

I am not telling you find the most expensive contractor. The key as a GC when your project is out for bid is, get 3-5 bids back for each task in the project and pick the best one that meets in the middle of those 3-5 bids per task. This can be time consuming. this is why people usually will hire a general contractor to manege the project. At our company we like to offer it as a plug and play service.
I hope this answered your question.

Good luck with your remodel!!!

It is always important to hire a contractor that has good reviews from existing customers. Base your decision on quality workmanship reported by satisfied customers. I find a service like Angie’s List can provide you with local contractors who do good quality work.

Yes, price is always a consideration, but other factors must be considered; such as: workmanship/ quality, warranty, timeliness/ responsiveness, and the contractor’s ability to delivery the completed project within the agreed upon budget.

Same here - I would say go for quality, not price. I am a contractor , but I don’t do interiors and I had to go through the same process as you when I needed to remodel my kitchen. I did not chose the lowest bit and I am very happy with the result. Also, as a contractor, I had numerous calls to go and fix the jobs made by cheaper contractors…

I think you should check for his experience in doing such kind of work and then take reviews from those where this contractor already worked. In case of expense, you should compare price of two to three best contractors and then finalize one.

General rule of thumb is to take your two lowest bidders and qualify them as well as do a thorough post bid interview to review the bids and scope of work.

REPUTATION -that what you cannot buy!!!.If you not strong in some field and you hire sub with great reputation that smart and when the job will be done good that also help build your own reputation. If you good contractor but extremely busy and you hire low cost sub. It possible that you ern some money but it not worth when after while you lose good reputation.

There is problem with going cheap you will always hear at the end " you get what you pay for" i believe in paying guys what they deserve to earn, the more experience the more expensive but you can rely on them doing the job correct, they won’t take off after they get the first check, they will not hate working on the job, they will want to continue to work for the person who took care of them , cheap labor is what is ruining it for hardworking good quality workers, so in my opinion , and i am not saying the most expensive is always best i’m simply saying what is fair, somewhere in the middle where both sides can be happy

You get what you pay for. Always quality.

I always say that the money you save on the cheaper subs buys a lot of tylenol! Typically when you hire the cheaper subs it is because they are looking to make quick money and move on to the next project as quick as possible, and may not have the proper training and knowledge to do the job correctly. Also it usually means the do not have workmen’s comp or liability insurance, and maybe no license at all. This will leave you holding the bag if anything goes wrong or anyone gets hurt including you.

When determining who to hire for anything, whether a single-trade contractor or a general contractor, there’s always a balance of budget demands and expectations of quality. The two most important factors that determine cost are quality of materials and quality of craftsmanship.

It’s my opinion that in general, paying more for better quality is always preferable to saving a little right now. It applies in every area of life- if you have the cheapest dentist in town take care of your toothache you might save $500 now (which is great!), but in a month when the pain is back the savings won’t compare to the ongoing pain. Usually you pay more overall by going with lesser initial quality.

Being a quality conscious contractor I can tell you that you wouldn’t want to put a professional contractor next to a fly by night hack! When you have a vision of what you want you expect exactly that!! With that being said don’t expect that quality finish with inferior products and less than professional contractors. Talk is cheap and so are scammers that make the choice of contractors a crap shoot. But thankfully there are ways to weed out these bad eggs one is by using build zoom to help with the task also the BBB is helpful when finding a honest and true contractor.Ray Rimel’s Custom Finishing
