We have some pretty damaged plaster walls and need a cost effective DIY solution. Is it better to try and patch them up, cover them up, or remove them and put in drywall?
You could Also have some 1/4" drywall install on top of it and finish it so you don’t have to deal with the demolition, asbestos or lead paint.
If the plaster walls are beyond repair it is better to remove the plaster and replace it with new Sheetrock. some things you cannot avoid and really damaged plaster walls are one of them. There is nothing better than new Sheetrock on the wall and a fresh coat of paint
If you replace all the plaster walls of your home with drywall, try contacting your homeowners insurance agent. The insurance agent can have the policy adjusted to lower your premiums for replacement cost of your existing home in case of damage, since drywall is cheaper than plaster.
all depending wall conditions ,If drywall very old or have moisture ,recommended to replace ,also if deformed and you want to straight the walls is better replace for new , but again all upon budget and necessity , other idea is place a 1/4 DW on top and finish. good luck
