Is the contractor reputable, honest, licensed? Ask for references, length of time Contractor has been in business. Are they working under the original company name or have they changed names (re-licensed) due to some unresolved issue with the Building Official?
First thing they need to be licensed in the state where work will be done , second must be insured to preform work in that state , three, they should have many up to date references for your type of project , four should be able to have a written estimate of your project , and a written contract showing all the estimate scope and payment schedule for progress of project , in mass can not collect no more than 1/3 down for deposit on labor and materials before start of project ,but can collect 100% on materials delivered to project site materials only .

A contractor should take pride in there name and service. Providing credentials and references is key. Also a contractor should be knowledgeable within the scope of work presented. Always do your own research about your project before searching for a contractor. It will help you understand the scope of work and approximately the general cost. Being 100% prepared goes along way!
