Most clients might become worried and weary when selecting a paint color for a renovation or remodel for many reasons. Including whether or not the painting contractor will okay with using what a client prefers to use.
Quintero Painting Company has familiarized themselves with various types of paints and stains from many different providers, and there is not one particular paint retail provider that you will be stuck with. We will give our clients the best options to chose from when considering colors for their projects, all the while assisting them in making that decision to support and ensure comfortability.
A&R Bentley Painting: Yes, you can use paint from any paint store. But you want to let the contractor know what paint you plan on going with during the estimate/consultation. There is a price difference between paint manufacturers.
Any paint store worth their salt can match colors between brands. Some do it better than others. Lowes and Home Depot are the worst at matching. My Sherwin Williams is great at it. Other local paint stores not so much.
It’s rare that my clients want a specific brand of paint but it does happen. Normally I’m asked to use what I recommend. I’ve painted some crazy colors but I always tell my clients they are the ones looking at it each day so it’s their choice. I never choose colors as I do not want to have to repaint for free due to the homeowner not liking the color.
The short answer is yes: you can choose any color you like, from any store. After all, the contractor is there to bring your vision to life. But while you have plenty of options at your disposal, I suggest that you consult your contractor (or designer) when it comes to choosing the brand, line, and finish that is suitable for each application.
Many painting contractors have a brand preference (for example, if they have a credit account with Sherwin Williams, they may be more inclined to buy there). If you like a color from Benjamin Moore, or Behr, your painter may suggest, for example, using Sherwin Williams but matching the color. That is ok, but make sure that you understand which line is used (basic, contractor grade, low VOC’s self-priming, oil based versus water based) and why. Ultimately, it is your choice, and while a contractor may make a suggestion, you have the final word. Google is your friend. Fully research each product before deciding. For a large project, be sure to read specifications, surface preparation, re-coating times, etc. Picking the wrong product can be costly.
The answer is yes! If there is a certain color you have fallen in love with you can absolutely use that color. As a contractor we want our clients to be satisfied with what they have chosen. We will typically use Sherwin Williams paint, as they have a great color matching system, but are typically a higher grade paint. What you pay for is what you get, and this little higher price point compared to a Menards, Lowes, or Home Depot, is worth the extra money. Sherwin Williams has access to hundreds of different stores color palettes and color percentages to ensure that you will get exactly what you are looking for.
The answer may depend on your painting contractor or their quote. Some colors require extra work to cover successfully (reds and dark colors particularly). In general you should be able to pick any color you want to use, but it may change the scope of the project.
In addition, some contractors use certain brands of paint because of the quality of the products available. Some paints available in popular home improvement stores don’t perform as well as specialty painting supplier products. Chances are your painting contractor is getting a better price at their supplier than you will from a home improvement store, so in my opinion it’s best to give them a color choice and allow them to use their own products. Just verify the products they’re using are on par with the quality you’re expecting.
Most painters have a paint brand and product they prefer to use. If you have a paint swatch to give them, they should be able to get it color matched. It may take 1 or 2 tries. Make sure you test the different brands.
