Aaron,
You can just call your local Zoning Office and find out what zone you are in for starters. Sometimes it is as simple as providing your address; sometimes they ask for your Lot and Block. Once you know your zone, you can look at the required setbacks for your town and the ordinances associated with your zone. Some communities have this information online; others you need to physically go to the Zoning Office and look it up. Usually for a homeowner, the Zoning Officer is nice enough to help you with it to make sure you comply. If you used an architect, this would be one of the first things he/she does to make sure you conform. If you do not conform, you can seek a variance but there are no guarantees of it being granted. Good Luck!
