Depends on where you are in the good old US of A.
Low Range from a big box store or import supplier.
Mid-Top Range from a reputable local supplier or custom cabinet maker.
Great question! There are a few places to purchase cabinets at a reasonable price, but first, you need to differentiate the different styles of cabinets. There are 4 different types of cabinets: Pre-Built, Off The Shelf (in a Big Box store), Semi-Custom, Custom and RTA (Ready To Assemble). The least expensive option is Off The Shelf.
RTA cabinets are a 1/3 of the price of traditional prices. In other words, if a 30" base cabinet costs $300, an RTA cabinet will cost about $100. The good news is that you typically receive a decent product; i.e., plywood sides, soft close, full overlay (without the upgrade charge). But, it will take about 15 minutes per box to put together plus paint quality may vary between boxes (depending if the fronts were painted on the same run). A typical kitchen would cost about $3,000 for all cabinets and cabinet pulls (but, there would be another $3,000 for a granite countertop, sink, faucet and another $2,500 for appliances, $2,500 for floors and $5,000 for labor and profit - that adds up to $16,000).
Off The Shelf cabinets from Big Box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot are good for rental properties and quick fixes, but the end product lacks a ‘wow’ factor. However, Rustoleum offers a cabinet paint that can add a little extra to the boxes. Plus, you can select appealing knobs and pulls to ‘dress up’ the cabinets. Also, the cabinet selection can be limited; i.e., no trash can drawer, drawer boxes, etc. In all, you can purchase all cabinets and hardware for $2,500.
Semi-Custom cabinets purchased during a promo period would be the best solution for a midrange budget. Most promos come with a free sink base or 11% off or some type of savings offering. The largest manufacturer is Master Brand Cabinets, which has about 10 cabinet lines (with different names) sold by Big Box stores and independent dealers alike, and Master Brand Cabinets offers a variety of semi-custom and custom cabinets.
The difference between semi-custom and custom cabinets are that semi-custom cabinets use traditional sizes but offer a variety of additional options. And, custom cabinets can be made to whatever size and however you would like. But, semi-custom cabinets like the Kemper Echo line offer numerous wood options, finish options and style options to make the cabinet feel custom without the custom price. The actual cabinets will cost about $7,000, which is 2x the cost of the cheaper options, but the quality and style make the additional $3,000-$4,000 worth it (if you are going to stay in the home for awhile). So, either find a Big Box store or a local, independent dealer of one of Master Brand’s cabinet lines to discuss options.
