If you hire a contractor and they did not do the work correctly, they should come out to fix it. You should not have to pay for it.
The contractor that started the project should finish the project! Unfortunately, a lot of people consider themselves a contractor and even more often a carpenter. And most times you pass a quality contractor for the cheapest price. There in lies the answer - get a reputable contractor
Choose the contractor with a good reputation, not the cheapest one. In the end, you save time and money.
when a contractor does something wrong or does bad craftsmanship it should be on the contractors expense to remedy the problem. there was times in the past that I paid for my mistakes. this is the nature of the business. at the end of the day you have to deliver what the costumer is paying you for.
On a lump sum contract, the contractor has to provide you with the appropriate workmanship, it is the contractors responsibility to fix any issues related to the project.
Unfortunately I see this too often in RI. No client should pay to redo bad work. Any decent contractor won’t have an issue with being paid after inspections are done- you know its done right and they deserve their pay

Contractors are bound to finish the project on time and in the proper manner. Work should be up to standard of the city building code. If the contractor did not finish the work in accordance with the plans and the agreed scope of work per contract, homeowner should not be made to pay in full.
Payments are based on job progress itemized on the contract or agreement. If the milestones or the stage payments are not met, payment may not be enforced.
Building departments only set the minimum standards for permitted jobs. Any contractor doing both rough and finished work had better provide craftsmanship far above that established by minimum code standards. As a customer my expectations certainly exceed minimum building standards. If your rough in was not level for example, then work is done by another sub to finish before rough mistakes are corrected, you end up with a terrible looking end result. As a customer, I will demand the finished work torn out, my materials replaced and the rough in mistakes corrected as well as the finished work redone at the contractors expense. It’s the GC’s responsibility to supervise the work. I don’t pay for the same job twice. It’s the contractor who is at fault.
