Who do I hire first for structural work: an engineer or a GC?

You could hire a framer. Mostly a GC would work as well.

You should hire an engineer first or an architect.

Either one is fine. An engineer will tell you how it needs to be done. Many times a GC will have an engineer they have used and have good rapport with. If you have a good referral for either one, I would start there.

An architectural engineer should be hired first. He’s the guy or gal that’s going to put everything together as far as the drawings and scope of work before the work gets started. The GC comes after

Depends on the type of project, i would usually hire an engineer and/or an architect.

You should always consult an engineer/architect for structural projects. Also be cautious of any contractor that doesn’t suggest consulting with one.

Depending on the project, the first step should be hiring an architect/engineer, but we always recommend going with one that has worked with your contractor on several occasions. This ensures the total project will run smoothly so the contractor can stay within the client’s budget and that the client won’t have to go back to his independent architect for multiple revisions. An architect can draw up the plans for a palace, but the contractor that’s building the structure may have to break the budgeting news to the architect and client, reminding them of what is realistic for that specific project.

You always hire a structural engineer the are qualified for this type of work and further you will be covered by their insurance if the building falls down from bad design. Never go by what a GC says they have a good idea but not the proper schooling to make that call. I could recommend a variety of fixes or designs but my recommendation is just that.
