Why is it so expensive to move plumbing a few feet to a different wall?

Anytime plumbing is moved, it requires a permit due to the number of fixture units that can be on a run, as well as how far off the main line fixtures can be.

The cost will vary by the complexity of the move. It isn’t as simple as placing new fixtures where you want them. The plumbing system is a true system. Distance away from a vent, how you will conceal the plumbing, if there is access below to run a drain and maintain pitch, do you have to break up a slab or concrete, and many other factors have to be considered and will impact cost. It requires knowledge and skill to make sure any alterations will maintain functionality. Drains can only be installed in certain ways. Sometimes you simply can’t put something where you might want to and have the system operate properly. Standards must be maintained with a plumbing system for the entire system to work. That all costs money.

Also type of material and time are associated in the costs.

Probably because relocating something is always harder then installing the same thing when the house is just being built. In new construction, the space is always open, available and easier to work with. In remodeling on another hand its always harder, because to get to the pipe, you have to open the wall and work around other pipes, and wires that already exist in the place, go around them and stuff. You also need to make minimum damage to existing walls while installing your pipes inside the walls. Re piping old house always take more work, knowledge and skills then piping the new house. So that’s why it costs more to relocate your existing plumbing.
