Why is my paint flaking after 1 year?

We repainted our kitchen ceiling last year, but the area above the sink is already flaking. The original ceiling was painted with semi gloss paint and quite dirty. However, we both washed it down with TSP and sanded it, then primed before painting.

Where did we go wrong?

Hi, it’s important to let the primer dry 100% before apply the actual paint. There are a few options:

  1. The type of paint used - there is some cheap paint that is not high quality and creates a high risk this will happen.
  2. If there is a lot of sun light in the area, some of the time it’s next to a window or skylight, high chance it will happen.
  3. If they didn’t do good preparation work and clean the area 100% before appling primer.

Hope i helped you if you want you cans end me pictures i will be able to answer better

Hi Dave,

Seems like you did a great job on the prep but you might have used a low quality primer. In cases of a really dirty and greasy ceiling, oil base primer is recommended; that could be the reason.
I hope it helped.

Take care !
