Why would cracks appear in a brand new wall?

We just finished our custom home, and overall are very happy with the work. However, I noticed a small crack in the downstairs bathroom wall. The crack is in the drywall behind the paint and is pushing out - so it can’t be from an object that hit the wall. It’s very small though (only about 2 inches). Should I be concerned?

Not really. It could be a crack in the joint where it was taped, or a crack near a drywall screw or nail. Without seeing it, it is hard to say. However, drywall is not structural. If you just finished, you should be able to contact the builder to come back and fix it. As I said it is not structural so it is not going to create a major problem, just a minor nuisance.

  1. could be a nail pop, thats why I use screws

  2. new homes will settle, and cracks occur… wait about a year, in case others pop up, and have your builder fix them all in 1 swoop

Could be a number of issues but more than likely the home/structure is settling into its foundation

I love this Question! Right…? Why in the world do cracks form On a new home!?? lemme tell ya… shifting from the wind, concrete settling, drywall expanding; no stopping these items from occurring so when they, the drywall expands and contracts. This “hard shift” creates small cracks that become larger over a short period of time. Only way to fix it is the sand and re-tape over the crack!

It could be multiple causes but without checking it out I would probably suggest a foundation settling or issue. We had a foundation renovation and afterwards the window gaps were over an inch and every corner of every wall and doorframe cracked.
