So my son does roofing and decided to help us get a new roof. The day he decided to do it, it was unusually windy so he only got half of it done. He took out all of the vents and decided to put on a ridge vent which hasn’t been done yet. Now we have half a new roof and no vents for two months because he hasn’t been able to get back. Is this a problem not having vents? My husband is really worried. Thank you. Dawn Huot
Hello: A good roof should be constructed as a “system”, which means that there are a number of things necessary other than the roof surface. Ventilation is one of these things and there should be two parts to this ventilation. One is the ridge vent as the one your son is creating. The other is the soffit vent, and both together are described as a ridge-soffit ventilation system. A roof should have both in order for air to flow through the entire roof, similar to a car with two windows open while driving.
I hope this helps!
If he installed the ridge vent and your soffits are still their the system is still working.
If somehow one is missing them your building heat in the attic and that is not good on the long term for anything not just the roof.
Try to get it finished as soon as you can.
