What are some of the most interesting construction projects happening right now across the country? We’ve looked into over 300,000 new building permits to enter our database since our last post, and share our favorites with you here in our second BuildZoom Picks of the month!
1) Wrigley Field Ballpark Enters Final Stage of Renovation

The Chicago Cub’s historic 1914 ballpark is finally entering its fourth and final stage of restoration and expansion, known as the 1060 project. Phase 1 of the renovation began in 2014 with significant bleacher expansions, and subsequently has pulled upwards of $200 million in building permits since. The latest major building permit to be issued on October 12 has an estimated cost of $20 million, and describes renovations to the concourse level, the lower bowl, new suites, and the buildout of four luxury clubhouses.

2) Carter High Getting $31.7 M Makeover

The David W. Carter High School in Dallas made headlines in 1988 not only for the football team’s victory in that year’s Texas state championship, but also when members of the team committed an armed robbery. The fall from stardom has been recounted in documentaries and most recently in the 2015 sports film Carter High. Building permits show that the school, where 100% of students belong to a minority group and 78% are reported as economically disadvantaged, will be undergoing a $31.7 million makeover. The nine building permits describe construction work to a range of facilities, including remodeling the wood shop, band hall, locker room, theater, classrooms, and the addition of a storm shelter and gym.

3) Tesla Expands Supercharger Network

As Tesla ramps up production of its most affordable car, the Model 3, so is the company’s dedication to expanding its network of superchargers which will be the lifeblood of the electric vehicle. Recent building permits show that downtown Chicago, which currently only has one supercharging station, will be getting two more locations at 3030N Broadway and 1100 S Canal Street. Incline Village, NV is also set to get 5 superchargers in a supermarket parking lot, marking the first supercharger location in the north shore of Lake Tahoe. Another 8 supercharger cabinets and 16 charging posts are slated for Deer Valley, in north Phoenix.
4) WeWork Expands Legacy West Location

Just months after unveiling its new space in Plano at Legacy West, WeWork has pulled a building permit to build out the second floor of the building, doubling their workspace from 25,000 square-feet to 50,000, and increasing member capacity to 1,000. WeWork has opened two other spaces in Dallas since January 2017- the first in Uptown, and the second in Thanksgiving Tower. The co-working enterprise expects to more than double its membership from 1.6 million in 2017 to 3.8 million by 2020.

5) Gulf States Toyota Spends Over $27 Million on Harvey Repairs

The offices and parking structures of Gulf States Toyota, one of the world’s largest private distributors of Toyota vehicles, have been hit hard by Hurricane Harvey. Four building permits filed October 13 show over $27 million in repairs, including $5 million at 1345 Enclave Parkway, $15 million at 1355 Enclave Parkway, $800K at 1365 Enclave Parkway, and $6 million at 1375 Enclave Parkway.
